Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) is a safe and non-invasive treatment method used to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and help to help stimulate the body's natural healing abilities of various tissues. It is a relatively new treatment modality using an FDA-approved device that has been gaining popularity in recent years due to its ability to treat a wide range of conditions.
Through testing and experimentation, scientists have discovered that every tissue in the body has its own unique resonant frequency. When tissues are injured, they may need help to initiate repair using specific frequencies that have been established for each tissue.
When being treated, an FDA-approved medical device is used to deliver an electrical current and frequency to the affected parts of your body. The electrical current is very low (one-millionth of an ampere) and safe. It may be interesting to note that our body naturally produces a current in each of our cells.
Based on the injury and tissue involved, the doctor selects specific frequencies to encourage natural healing of the body and reduce pain. One theory on how this works is that the FSM may increase ATP (adenosine triphosphate) inside damaged cells and tissues. ATP is the primary source of cellular energy in the body. Studies have found that FSM can increase the amount of ATP in damaged tissues by as much as 500%. This increase in ATP drives repair and recovery.
While FSM is commonly used in the treatment of muscle pain, nerve pain, sprains, inflammation, and scar tissue. Protocols for the following conditions have also been established:
· Arthritis
· Fibromyalgia
· Broken bones and chronic fractures
· Sport injuries
o Plantar fasciitis
o Sprains and strains
o Tendonitis (Tennis elbow, Golfers elbow, weightlifting injuries)
o Any acute (sudden) and chronic (long-term) musculoskeletal injuries.
· Scars and associated pain (post-surgical)
· Disc injuries (neck, spine, low back)
· Diabetic neuropathy
· Burns
· Post-workout muscular pain/soreness/discomfort
· Shingles (prevent severe cases, reduce post-shingles pain)
· Kidney stone pain
· Concussion
· PTSD
· Headaches
· Depression
In general, FSM treatment is painless. The currents used with FSM are so low that you usually don’t even feel them. In rare cases, you may feel a slight tingle, warmth, and softening of the affected tissues.
During your treatment, your healthcare provider will set the frequencies to be used for your particular condition. The current is typically applied with a moistened towel or skin patches around the areas of concern. It is important to note that you must be well-hydrated before your FSM treatment. We suggest 32 ounces of water within 2 hours before treatment to help the microcurrent travel through the tissues. Treatment times can vary from 30 - 90 depending on the tissue types and severity of the issue.
Depending on how recently the issues happened, the severity of the condition, and your level of pain, the effects of treatment can last several days or longer. In many instances, lasting relief can be achieved in 3-10 treatments.
The following shouldn’t receive FSM treatment:
Certain frequencies also shouldn’t be used in cases of acute infection, or new scar tissue (within six weeks). Make sure to talk about any of these concerns with the doctor before treatment.
Side effects from FSM treatments are usually rare and mild, and may include:
